Thermal Management

Thermal Management

Thermal management is required for electronics, spacecraft, internal combustion engines and more. Our engineers have extensive experience and the tools necessary to design and analyze components and assemblies for thermal management to improve reliability and performance.

Electronics

If an electrical component overheats there is a high risk of premature failure, fire, explosion or injury. As heat increases the electrical resistance also increases. If a circuit experiences heat above its operating temperature the increased resistance within the circuit can reduce the voltage capacity of the circuit causing a short or a variety of other dangerous failures.

Electronics use a combination of thermal management systems to prevent overheating. One method which we specialize in is the use of heat-dissipating systems. Heat dissipation systems use fans, heat sinks, liquid cooling, specialized enclosures and more to remove heat from electronics to prevent overheating. We have the capacity to design and analyze heat-dissipation systems to ensure electrical components have adequate cooling to remain within their operating temperature during high demand.

Spacecraft

Systems and instruments on spacecraft can be sensitive to the large thermal fluctuations experienced in space caused by exposure to deep space and solar radiation. Thermal management systems are required to keep equipment within operating temperatures and prevent failure caused by exposure to large thermal fluctuations.

Spacecraft use two types of systems for thermal management, passive thermal control systems (PTCS) and active thermal control systems (ATCS). We can design and analyze thermal control systems to ensure that equipment enclosures maintain acceptable temperatures for equipment operation.

Internal Combustion Engines

Exhaust heat management is required to prevent internal combustion engine heat from damaging important components near exhaust systems. Heat management is used to reflect, dissipate or absorb heat in order to prevent heat from escaping the exhaust system. There are multiple types of heat management used for internal combustion engines including heat shields, ceramic paints, thermal barrier coatings, and heat wraps.

We can design and analyze exhaust heat management systems to ensure heat does not escape the exhaust system on internal combustion engines.
